BS Psychology
The Bachelor of Science in Psychology (BS Psychology) is an undergraduate degree program that delves into the scientific study of human behavior and mental processes. This program usually offers students a strong grounding in psychological theory, research methods, and practical applications. Here are some of the key features associated with a BS in Psychology.
What is BS Psychology?
Psychology is a scientific study of the human mind and behavior. The BS program focuses on providing a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental processes of sensation, perception, learning, cognition, development, and personality. It also covers the principles of Social Psychology, Clinical Psychology, and Behavioral Neuroscience.
In today's rapidly changing society, knowledge of psychological principles and scientific methods is critical in evaluating theories and research in the social sciences. The program's primary objective is to integrate the scientific foundation of Psychology with a strong background in Humanities and basic science. This integration aims to better prepare students for advanced training in Psychology, Medicine, Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, and other related disciplines.
The B.S. Degree program is designed explicitly to prepare students for advanced graduate studies in the sciences and science-based professions.
Eligibility :
To be eligible, the candidate must have completed 12 years of education at an intermediate level with a minimum of 45% marks.
Duration :
It is a four-year full-time program that is divided into eight semesters. Each semester lasts for at least 18 weeks, which includes teaching and exams.
Program Objectives :
Following are the main objectives of the program:
- To equip students with conceptual tools, scientific knowledge and practical skills so that they can gain a deeper understanding of themselves, others and human existence in general
- To articulate how psychological principles can be used to explain and understand the dynamics of social and psychological issues
- To develop insights among students about how psychological principles can be used to understand and improve lifelong learning, social skills and environment related issues
Assessment of Study Progress:
The evaluation system for students' academic progress is based on continuous assessment throughout the semester. This is done by assigning tasks, conducting online quizzes, graded discussion boards (GDBs), and mid-term and final-term exams. The mid-term and final-term exams are held at designated exam centers of VU and usually carry 80 to 85% weightage in the total marks for a course.
Project Internship :
Students are required to complete a Research Project (PSY619) of three credit hours in final semester of the program. The choice of final project is at the student’s discretion. However, consultation with the student advisor is compulsory. Students will submit a detailed write-up of the research project and will give a viva presentation.
As per the requirements outlined in the Internship Report (document number 1), students are expected to complete a 6-8 week internship at either a psychiatric clinic or a school. During the internship, students must obtain an Internship Letter from the organization where they are interning. Upon completion of the internship, students should be issued an Internship Completion Certificate by the organization. Afterward, students must submit a detailed internship report and give a viva presentation.
